Do I Need a New WIFI Router?
You know the saying: “They don’t make things like they used to.” Well, that phrase may not necessarily be true when it comes to your router. The thing is, technology keeps changing, improving. What was state of the art 3 years ago may be considered ‘old tech’ today. Ten years ago, in the average home, a WIFI router supported a computer and several smart phones. Today, the router must support the computer, phone, television, game system, security system, and even smart home technology.
Keeping up with the times is just one reason that your router may need to be replaced. Here are a few more indicators that an upgrade may be warranted.
- Does your Router fit your Plan? Not all routers are created equal. If you are on a 100Mb internet plan, you will want to make sure that the WIFI router you are using is one that can accommodate that speed. To check the specifications of your router, simply type in the make and model of your router into a Google search. If you are using an Xtreme provided WIFI router, you can find those specifications here:
- Slow Speeds If you have had a good connection in the past, but things seem to be a bit slower than usual, then your router could be on its way out. The best way to check your true internet speed is to disconnect the Ethernet cable from the back of the WIFI router and plug in directly into your computer. If performance is noticeably better than when using Wi-Fi, then you’ve likely identified your problem.
- Frequent Disconnections: If your devices are frequently losing connection to the WIFI network, it could indicate a problem with the router. First check that there are no obstructions getting in the way of your router or that it wasn’t inadvertently moved. Does your WIFI connection seem to be better the closer you are to the router? If you cannot connect in areas of your home where you were able to connect before, then it is time for a new router.
- Outdated Technology: If your router is several years old and lacks features like modern security protocols or dual-band support, it might be time for an upgrade. Keeping up with firmware updates will ensure optimum performance, but only to a point. As technology continues to evolve, replacing equipment will be inevitable to keep pace.
Xtreme5G recommends using quality WIFI routers from TPLink or NetGear. When shopping for a router, be sure to sellect a model that is compatible with your intended use, such as video streaming, gaming, etc. Check out the top 10 WIFI Routers for 2024!
